Abstract

These five small diaries were written by Theresa E. Searles from 1864-1873. She wrote a diary entry each day for the years 1864, 1866, 1870, 1873, and 1874, mostly describing her everyday life in New York. The diaries chronicle Teresa's growth from adolescence to her early 20s.

Biographical History

Theresa E. Searles was born in 1851 to successful farmer Jonathan Searles (1807-1883) and his wife, Mary Coles Searles (1805-1883). She was one of nine children, seven of which were daughters. She married Franklin Oliver Smith (1874-1924) on January 14, 1874, and together they had four children: Ida, Lawrence, Harold, and Herbert. Theresa died on January 26, 1917 in New Rochelle, Westchester, New York.

Scope and Content Note

These diaries recount Theresa E. Searles' life in rural New York from 1864-1873. She wrote daily in her diaries in 1864, 1866, 1870, 1873, and 1874. She details her everyday life, going to church and school, celebrating holidays, and keeps track of everyone who visits her home.
