This collection features various illustrated pencil works and four prints by John Benjamin Moll Jr (1909-1991). Moll was well known for his marine paintings and his lithographs, a good portion of which was produced in his home at Oxford, Maryland from 1946 - 1986. The collection focuses on his architectural and street view work for various cities across Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania and more across the United States East Coast. The pieces were created between 1974 to 1984. For his maritime work, they can be found at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum in St. Michaels, Maryland.
John B. Moll, Jr was born on May 6th, 1909, to John B. Moll and Deborah Ann Knocher in Pennsylvania. In 1937 he married his wife, Elizabeth Bryne Moll nee Pool. Together they had two daughters, Christina Moll and Debrah Moll. He died on February 16th, 1991, after having been retired for five years. He was well known for his work creating marine paintings and lithographs. He started his studies at the School of Industrial Arts in Philidelphia. From there he moved to study at Wilmington Academy of Art in Delaware. After the second World War he moved to Oxford, Maryland in 1946. While living in Oxford, he had a commercial studio selling oil paintings, pencil work, watercolor paintings and his signature lithographs. The stones used for his lithographs were made using stones he had oversaw preparations for in New York. His works can be found in both color and in black and white. He stayed working at his studio until 1986, when he retired.
This collection features various illustrated pencil works by John Moll Jr. Additionally four black and white prints, a single-colored piece, and a family coat of arms are in the collection as well. The works range in cities around the Eastern Coast of the United States, primarily focusing on cities in Maryland such as Baltimore and Annapolis. The time frame for these works is from 1974 to 1984. The art mostly depicts architecture and street views. Furthermore, there are about 28 works which give no apparent location but match this theme. There are four black and white prints that depict sailing ships, matching the maritime works that John Moll Jr. was known for.
Works were grouped together by state, then city for this collection
