Abstract

The Peter Whaley Collection contains information about National Parks, publications on exploration, and a patriotic film dating from 1922 to 1932. Included in the collection are travel guides for Yosemite, Sequoia, General Grant, Grand Canyon, and Yellowstone National Parks. There is also an illustrated guide to Mount Vernon, the home of George Washington. Additionally are two publications, "Billy and Jane Explorers" by James Speed and "Dodge-Lackey Geography of Delaware" by Harter Earley. Finally, there is a 16mm silent film of "Yankee Doodle."

Biographical History

Peter Walter Whaley was born on June 27, 1937. His father, Peter Whaley was born in Whaleyville, MD in 1910, the son of Walter Peter and Josephine Dale Whaley. Walter worked as a farmer and Josephine as the postmaster of Whaleyville. In 1932 Peter Whaley married Madeline Watson, the daughter of Mrs. Pasha Watson. Mrs. Pasha Watson, a funeral director, sent Peter and Madeline to the Eckels College of Embalming in Philadelphia. Peter became a funeral director and partner in the Watson and Whaley Funeral Home in Selbyville, DE. He was also a member of Doric Masonic Lodge in Millville, the Selbyville Rotary Club, and the Delmarva Coon Hunting Club.
